What have we been up to lately?  Well...

In reading we've been learning about how sequencing and predicting stories makes us become better readers.  We started recording our leveled books on our book logs and evaluating how they made us feel as readers.  We made 'shape-go-maps' to help sequence stories.  Be sure to read and log books at home too!

In writing we've been discussing where authors get ideas for their stories.  We've been sharing lots of experiences that make excellent stories.  We have the opportunity to work on new pieces or continue working on pieces that we've already started but still need to work on.

In math we have been working on copying images and building images with cubes.  For calendar math we've been working making word problems from combinations of five, adding to our weather graph, keeping a tally of how many days we've been in school and learning how to read a calendar.

In science we've been weighing items and recording which item weighs more and which items weighs less.

Whew...We sure are busy in room 14!

Our First Week Back

We have had a great first week back! In all of our workshops we have been practicing our rituals and routines along with remembering where things belong in our classroom. We wrote our class promise and made a great reward system for having good behavior in the cafeteria. As a class, we decided that we will go over to the newer, bigger playground on days that we receive a sticker from the cafeteria for following all of the CHAMPS. The kids have been really excited about this and its working out great. They are running more, climbing higher and playing harder than I've seen in quite awhile.

Thank you to all of the parents who pick up car riders for your patience and cooperation with our new system. We are working on a system that will keep the kids safe, happy and healthy. We will be holding all of the students in the cafeteria rather than outside. This will ensure no one is running into the street, getting overheated, or getting bit by ants. Please help us make the process go as quickly and smoothly as possible by staying in your car and having your manila folder available every day. The more the kids practice this new process the faster it will be and the quicker you can get home.

This week we will have our first graded spelling test. The students will take the test on Friday morning and all of the spelling words from the homework packet will be included. Words that include the letter b and d will need to be written correctly for credit. Be sure to practice the difference between the two.
